Vertebrates are animals with backbones, or spinal columns, made of interlocking units called vertebrae. This strong but flexible structure supports the body and anchors the limbs, and it also protects the nerves of the spinal cord. Vertebrates include: cats, and other type of animals such as amphibians, reptiles, birds, and fish.
Although vertebrates represent only a very small percentage of all animals, their size and mobility often allow them to dominate their environment.
